Kisampa Carbon Zero
Goal:
To protect and expand natural habitats that act as carbon sinks and provide suitable environments for wildlife. In doing so empowering people o manage these natural resources sustainably for the greater good of their communities and the planet as a whole.
Kisampa Carbon Zero is a project still under development, but is a project trying to raise money for conservation. The idea in to allow a way for people travelling to Tanzania to buy a carbon offset as part of their travel costs, providing a way for people to offset their carbon emission by adopting or sponsoring the protection of a tree at Kisampa. The money donated will be used to conserve the Kisampa.
Some facts:
An average American’s carbon footprint is 21.5 metric tonnes annually.
A tree can absorb 24kg of CO2 per year, one acre new forest 2.5tons annually.
Example: Return flight Nairobi to Maasai Mara is 2 hours and covers 223 miles. In Cessna caravan with average 6 persons on it, it is 100kg of co2 per passenger.
A small donation (5-15USD) protects one tree that absorbs 1 metric ton of carbon over 40 years.
How the project could be put into practice
Each person traveling could commit a few dollars per day, per traveler, which goes into a fund that helps the conservation of trees at Kisampa, or any other site in Tanzania.
The reason the project is important is because Kisampa and the trees at Kisampa, act as a carbon sink; natural systems that suck up and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This means that if we can protect these trees using the funds that people donate because they want to offset their carbon emissions in other places, the money can be used for conservation. By protecting Kisampa’s forests, we can offset the carbon emission of people from outside.
